It seems as though many people have allowed themselves to be lulled into a state of entrancement, so they seem oblivious to the negativity, incivility, injustice and other horrid developments around the world. While some of us seek that state of mindfulnesss or self-actualization, others appear to avoid it by numbing themselves to the dusfunctional behaviors so rampant in the U.S. and other industrialized nations. This numbness could be seen as "mindlessness" or a state of consciousness that might be compared to slumber.

This state of slumber is induced in many ways, avoidance, busy-ness, workaholism, consumerism, alcoholism and various other distractions which diverts the consciousness of the person so they avoid seeing the "darkness" and feeling the emotions that would normally arise upon full enaggement with the reality.

Major divisiveness runs riot in our politics, ideologies and religions. Climate change is threatening human existence and cynicism prevails, that form of fatalism that allows us to wash our hands of any responsibility for the mess we made of things.

Before you start making excuses and blaming the White House, or Osama, or anything or anyone else, look inside and see your own complicity in all this. Who has empowered these systems we claim to dislike? Who has allowed them to grow stronger and more influential by giving them legitimacy through silence or inattention?

It is time for all of us to assume command, full responsibility, and take back our power; reclaim our citizenship and de-legitamize all our dysfunctional systems, starting where we are planted - our families, where we work, and our governments.
