Imagine spending $1 Billion on security for a two week event for the G8 and G20 summits in Toronto. WOW! It's absurd!
OK it's an important event. But over $1 billion! Just on security!
Were (are) there any other options?
Let's think about it ...
Someplace secure. In Canada. With serious aircraft facilities. Reasonable accommodation. No terrorists allowed. Keep protestors to a minimum. Open spaces for major photo-ops. Hummmm ....
Let's try google.
Canadian military air force bases ...
Cold Lake Alberta - 4 Wing Cold Lake is the busiest fighter base in Canada. It provides general purpose, multi-role, combat capable forces in support of domestic and international roles of Canada's Air Force. Sounds like very serious security!
Gander Newfoundland - Among its many roles, 9 Wing Gander is responsible for providing search and rescue services throughout Newfoundland and Labrador as well as northeastern Quebec. Crews of 103 Search and Rescue Squadron are on 24-hour standby, ready to answer the call in one of the busiest search and rescue regions in Canada. They're already on standby for anything! Wow!
There are a few more to consider but the first two seem to fit the bill.
Everything was (is) already in place! You coulda, shoulda done it!
Ok so spend a mil. You coulda saved $999 million! Bozos!
