I have long believed that you can become an expert in any field by reading a dozen books. Please understand, this doesn’t mean you can do brain surgery or fly a 747, but it does mean that your knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge in the form of wisdom within any endeavor will surpass 99% of the population when you read a dozen books on the topic.

As a weekly columnist for almost a decade, and as the author of 12 books, I am embarrassed to admit, for many years of my life, I was not a reader. Reading is one of the activities that most directly correlates to success in every area of life. For the first 30 years of my life, when I could read words on a page as you are reading these words, I have to admit I don’t recall ever reading a whole book cover to cover. I read enough to get through school but saw no value in reading beyond that. Then, at nearly 30 years of age, I lost my sight and began living my life as a blind person.

Thanks to a high-speed tape recorder and the National Library for the Blind, for the last two decades I have read a book virtually every day. Becoming a voracious reader has not only made me a successful writer, but has given me virtually everything in life I wanted -- both personally and professionally.

Having read many thousands of books, I can think of only a handful that I would universally recommend to everyone. My friend, Brian Klemmer, has written such a book. Brian’s book entitled The Compassionate Samurai, teaches us how to use our power for good. This is a vital concept for each of our lives, our communities, and the world.

There are many people who have power who fail to focus it for good. There are also good people who have no power. Their best intentions rarely become reality. In The Compassionate Samurai, you will learn how to be both good and powerful. This is an unbeatable combination.

One of my favorite book reviewers and bookstore owners was a learned gentleman who had a motto that stated, “The more books you read, the taller you grow.” Truer words were never spoken.

As you go through your day today, remember: The greatest minds the world has ever known are ready to share their secrets. They are as close as your bookstore or library.

Today’s the day!
