If you have been following the news media’s coverage of the worldwide energy status, you have probably heard multiple times that we are in the midst of an energy crisis. The word “crisis” can be translated from an ancient Chinese sailing term meaning “an opportunity on a dangerous wind.” Rarely are there opportunities without a crisis, or a crisis without opportunities.
This past week, I toured DMI Industries and met with their General Manager Kevin Ishmael. DMI Industries is one of the leaders in the growing field of wind energy. It is obvious that wind power is going to play a significant role in the overall solution to our current energy crisis.
Wind has been around since the beginning of time, and for thousands of years it has powered sailing ships and pumped water. The current energy crisis has brought wind energy to the forefront of thinking in the political, economic, and business landscape. The solution has always been there, but only when the problem is magnified is the opportunity created.
All of us face challenges from time to time that we may label as a crisis. Quite often, the solution will reveal itself as something that has been available all along. We maximize our potential when we begin to see the opportunity before the crisis is at hand.
Those people who can function in a crisis and find a solution will be known as problem solvers. Problem solvers are valued members of any organization. Those people who can see an opportunity long before there is a crisis will be known as visionaries. They are leaders that shape the world in new ways and take us all in new directions.
The solution to our growing energy crisis is currently being worked out in garages, workshops, and basements all across the country. The crisis has brought out the problem solvers among us, and they will be equal to the task. Leaders and innovators are working on opportunities that involve solutions to a myriad of crises that have not yet appeared.
Look at the opportunities around you in your personal and professional life. Explore the resources you can tap into long before a crisis is at hand. The proverbial water probably exists below the ground where you are standing, but if you wait until you are thirsty to start digging the well, you may not survive the crisis.
As you go through your day today, look at each crisis as an opportunity and, more importantly, look at each opportunity as a resource to avoid an upcoming crisis.
Today’s the day!
