What is the most popular personal commitment, not gauged by what people tell you but observed from their actions and behaviors? Parenting children? Personal relationships, like with a spouse or partner? Excelling in a personal endeavor such as a sport or a business? While all these are fine examples of popular commitments in today’s world, I would like to suggest something you probably weren’t thinking about: People are more committed to their thoughts and opinions than anything or anyone else ...

I have come to see that being the light of the world in a deep and real way asks us for two things: Firstly, to directly realize who we truly are: to drop beyond concepts and imaginings to really experience ourselves as eternal unalterable light. Secondly, being the light asks us to actualize the light we are. This involves the shifting of our inner centre of gravity from a ground of ego identification to our true ground within the Absolute. Any true spiritual path addresses both dimensions simultaneously.

The birth of our new baby girl, Annarose, reminded me in a profound way of the miracle of life. What a magical, remarkable, and breathtaking experience it is to witness and participate in the birth of another human being. As I have had a few weeks to digest this a bit, to connect with my beautiful new daughter and my family, and to experience the range of emotions that often accompany a life-altering event like this, I've been reminded of so many aspects of life that are truly miraculous.

Why do we need to heal? What is it about being in the rat race that causes us so much discontentment and disease? With some studies showing that over 70% of office workers in the UK are currently suffering some form of ill health as a result of their jobs, it seems pertinent to explore downshifting as a healthier alternative.

A day doesn't go by without me thinking about the power of appreciation. That's because I have trained my mind to look for the good things in my life, focus my attention on them and take a moment or two to deeply appreciate the things that matter to me. And even with that, I don't do it often enough.

Hope is one of the most powerful sources of energy ever known to humankind. Without hope, we slip from living to just existing. Hope charges our spirit and draws us forward to a better tomorrow. Hope helps us see beyond the problems to the possibilities. Hope gives life meaning. Hope helps us take responsibility for our choices. Hope stretches us and energizes our continuous growth and development.

As a weekly columnist for almost a decade, and as the author of 12 books, I am embarrassed to admit, for many years of my life, I was not a reader. Reading is one of the activities that most directly correlates to success in every area of life. One of my favorite book reviewers and bookstore owners was a learned gentleman who had a motto that stated, “The more books you read, the taller you grow.” Truer words were never spoken.

These have been quite a wild and challenging few years for many small-business owners and solopreneurs (who make up a large percentage of the small-business-owner population). So much in the news about economic woes and other gloom-and-doom forecasts can affect the confidence and motivation, which are crucial when you're running your own business.

For spirit-centered solopreneurs, this is particularly true, because you're already doing something 'out of the norm' in approaching your work and business in a new way, with a new-paradigm perspective that moves away from the old Machiavellian 'the ends justify the means' approach.

So what's the best approach as you read the news and perhaps even experience a shift or seeming slow-down?

By learning to appreciate our challenges and see the opportunities in them, we take our power back from the situations and circumstances of our lives. Our ability to appreciate difficulties, learn from them, and use them to our advantage, gives us an important insight into who we really are and how to create success and fulfillment in a conscious and deliberate way.
