Be Your Own CEO!
Five Tips to Seize Your Leadership Potential and
Own Your Career

by Angela Mondou

"Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted - one moment - Would you capture it or just let it slip?" - Lose Yourself, Eminem

Did you know that 1.3 million Canadians are not that happy with their jobs? I would say that's a pretty alarming stat! I mean, I thought this was the new era - isn't it time to get out there and make a difference? What happened to the 'what's in it for me?' attitude. C'mon guys this is the decade where we are supposed to be seizing opportunity like never before - grabbing the bull by the horns, leading our own show. Instead, it looks like most Canadians are at the mercy of the corporate giant or the day-job that hasn't provided job security or happiness for decades.

What's in it for you?

Apparently many of us still suffer with the 'all talk no action' syndrome. And at least 10% of us are spending the bulk of our days -- not really that excited. I think it's time to wake up. Time to ask yourself what is in it for you? If you're not taking care of #1 - then 'who is'? How are you going to have an impact, how are you going to make that difference when you're not digging what you're doing?

So what is it you aspire to do?

  • Big sexy job in a hot corner office? Why not!
  • Humanitarian help in another country? We all need to give back.
  • Serial entrepreneur who takes risk to bring cool visions to reality? Innovation means progress.

'Closet' Entrepreneur

My career aspirations have been a little on the maverick side. A love of flying led to joining the air force at the early stages of my career which led quickly to other diverse projects; from leading humanitarian projects with orphanages to deploying a UN peacekeeping contingent into a war-zone…and later moving on to high-tech product launching at hyper-speed! Why not throw in self-publishing a book! It's never mattered who I work for, I have always been able to seek out the entrepreneurial space anywhere.

All because of a love for adventure and a need for change. Big business. Small business. Bureaucracy or entrepreneurial agility. You can always find what you are looking for no matter what organization you find yourself in.

You just have to know how.

Here are 5 tips to seize your potential and own your career (as taken from Hit the Ground Leading!).

  1. Maximize your potential -- SEIZE EVERY OPPORTUNITY.

This is the decade of leadership opportunity … for entrepreneurs, humanitarians, business leaders and visionaries. If you find yourself asking "What the hell am I doing here?" you are heading in the right direction!

  2. Know how to re-invent yourself and PUSH YOUR ENVELOPE -- everyday.

Stepping into the unknown takes courage, but exercising your courage brings on rapid personal growth and empowerment.

Running your own show and leading things on your terms also goes hand in hand with creating and dealing with change. And change always brings about uncertainty.

  4. Be an opportunist.

The 'Be Your Own CEO' mindset comes from getting good at recognizing and grabbing opportunity. Anticipating change, learning to love change and 'readiness' to take the leap of faith - are all skills to help you seize opportunity.

  5. Remember - the buck stops with you.

No-one else can really manage your career quite like you can. Whether you're ready to go after a big promotion, start you own company or make a difference in the world through volunteer work - it all takes personal accountability.
